The work of the staff at the CPA Centre is completely dependent on donor funding, the support of the Pietermaritzburg community, and monthly school fees paid by parents of children at the CPA Centre.

The Cerebral Palsy Association employs a physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist as part of its professional staff. These staff play a critical complementary role in working with the class teachers in assessing the capabilities and needs of each child and developing child specific physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy to support the teaching programme developed by the class teacher.

Horseriding has been identified as having enormous beneficial and therapeutic effect for children with Cerebral Palsy. Through sponsorship, children from the Pietermaritzburg & District Cerebral Palsy Association are able to enjoy and benefit from horseriding classes twice per month.

In addition, volunteers from PAWS (a group of individuals with gentle dogs used for therapy) visit CPA twice a month with their dogs. Children are encouraged to stroke and brush the dogs as part of their physiotherapy and also to develop social and interactive skills.

The Pietermaritzburg & District Cerebral Palsy Association has a number of projects underway, namely:

  1. Cerebral Palsy Centre
  2. Day Care
  3. Stepping Stones
  4. Life Skills Training Class
  5. Parents' Support Group
