UN Convention For Learners With Special Needs: Lotto Project
School Visit: 2016 AND 2017

An amount of R410,000 was allocated by the National Lottery in terms of Project 69459. The project is aimed at informing learners on the UN Convention and their rights as person with disabilities. The project was awarded to People for Awareness on Disability Issues (PADI) to present on behalf of NAPCP.

Between 2016 and 2017, several schools have been visited by Sandy Heyman, Vice Chairman (2015 – 2017) of NAPCP and Director of PADI. She has been accompanied and assisted by Sandi Isaacs of PADI. They presented informative, motivating and interactive talks on the UN Convention in the format of a story, which then entailed group interaction.

One of the schools they visited, was A M Moola Spes Nova School, where a total of 153 learners spread over the 8th – 9th May 2017 attended, of which 2 learners were Autistic. A very successful school visit was also conducted in 2016.

At St Raphael’s School, Grade 4 – 7 (31 Learners) of which 8 of the learners were Autistic, attended. Although Teachers assisted, once again most participated and were able to give reports of their “Magic Island”. Their drawings were very colorful considering their limitations and it was a humbling experience.

The Browns’ School was visited in 2016 and again in 2017. On 11 May 2017 a total of 49 learners, of which 4 were Autistic, attended the Workshop. The Teachers who assisted this group were very pleased with the way in which the learners responded.

Kwazamokuhle School was visited in April 2016 and again on 12 May 2017, when Workshops were conducted with the Housemothers on the UN Convention, which was much appreciated. 40 Staff attended this Workshop. At a separate workshop which was presented, there were 12 learners, of which 1 was Autistic.

CONCLUSION.

The reception received at each School was overwhelming and the team have asked to return in 2018. As there are still funds remaining, workshops can be scheduled for further sessions.

“It has been an untold privilege and pleasure for PADI to have been able to establish a Partnership with all the Schools visited.”
